A woman reaches her breaking point after enduring a grueling existence with her abusive, jealous partner, Arnett, at a rundown Kentucky horse concession. The catalyst for her desperate bid for freedom arrives in the form of a defiant new horse named Spite, who violently throws Arnett during a trail ride. When Arnett vindictively leaves the animal tied up without food or water overnight, the protagonist seizes her chance, incapacitating her abuser and leaving him battered and bound in their cabin. Taking Spite with her, she escapes across the Ohio River, embarking on a covert, cross-country journey north toward the promise of a new beginning on the ranches of Canada.
